Lucas told the Press Association: "Simon Fuller brought us out here. He of American Idol, Spice Girls and David Beckham - he invented David Beckham, you know. He said 'I think you could be funnier than David Beckham', so he brought us out here."
Lucas stated that the US version of the BBC sketch comedy would feature characters from the British original along with new American ones.
"It's a whole new show," he explained. "We've taken the best of our British characters from our seasons in England and then we've added a whole new raft of American characters so it's very fresh and it's really rejuvenated it for us."
Little Britain USA, which stars Lucas and comedy partner David Walliams, will begin on cable network HBO next month.
