The project will be scripted by Saturday Night Live's Christine Zander, while Saunders and Ian Moffitt will be executive producers.
It will transport the lead characters Patsy and Edina to Los Angeles, but will follow "the basic template of the original", according to Variety.
Rosanne Barr and Carrie Fisher attempted to redo the show for ABC a decade ago but failed, while CBS's short-lived sitcom High Society also alluded to the British series.
Absolutely Fabulous, which starred Joanna Lumley, June Whitfield and Julia Sawalha, ran as a regular show in the UK between 1992 and 1995. Further episodes aired in 1996, 2001 and 2003.
