The show, which has been given a 13-episode order by the Starz network, is inspired by the story of a slave who led 120,000 fighters in a revolt against the Roman Republic in 73BC.
"This is not going to be at all like the 1960s Kirk Douglas film," Starz programming head Stephan Shelanski told The Hollywood Reporter. "We didn't want your typical sword-and-sandals. It's going to be fun, fast-moving, full of action and interesting characters and have a little more depth to it than the 1960s film."
Episodes will be be budgeted at around $2 million each and brought to life using the green screen technology popularised by Sin City and 300.
