The news comes after the show attracted 5.9 million viewers in a new primetime Wednesday night slot this week.
"This unique crime drama continues to offer consistent and compelling stories each week," explained Teri Weinberg, NBC Entertainment's executive vice president. "We love Life and are thrilled that we get to see more of these characters and amazing new cases."
Life centres around police officer Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis), who is given a second chance after being released from prison following a twelve-year sentence for a crime he did not commit. The show premiered in September 2007.
The additional episodes provide the programme with a full second season order.
