Reality gameshow The Mole has been given the axe, it has been confirmed.
ABC has decided not to renew the programme - shown in the UK on Challenge - for a fifth instalment next season. In addition to two regular series, the celebrity version ran for two series, the most recent of which concluded this week.
Since its debut in 2001, The Mole failed to become a ratings success to rivals the likes of Survivor or American Idol.
However, the most recent run delivered ratings 43% higher than normal in the key adults 18-34 demographic, at a time when the network's overall ratings are down more than 25% on last season.
Production company Stone Stanley Entertainment confirmed that The Mole had been dropped by ABC but said that they were talking to other networks to renew the show for next season.
