The actor, who plays George O'Malley in the ABC medical drama, will be granted his request, according to People.
Yesterday a representative for the show denied reports that Knight had packed his bags and walked off set after reading upcoming scripts.
"He has been there every day," said a source. "He was at a table read yesterday. He hasn't said goodbye to anyone."
A show source also refuted rumours that Knight was still annoyed about his treatment by former co-star Isaiah Washington, who made a homophobic slur about him.
"The Isaiah stuff has no relevance at all," they said. "T.R. doesn't even know why people would mention it. It was so long ago."
Explaining Knight's reasons for leaving, the insider commented: "Have you seen the show lately? It's time to move on. It just feels like this is the right time to go."
ABC has not commented on the fresh rumours.
