Comcast to carry NBA TV
Published Wednesday, Mar 10 2004, 19:23 GMT | By James Welsh
Comcast will carry NBA TV, the network from America's National Basketball Association, on its digital cable service.
The deal is a major step forward for the TV channel, with 21m new customers being added to its potential subscriber base. At least initially, the channel will be added to a new sports tier of service.
Rollout will begin to ex-AT&T Broadband markets in April, with a full rollout to most other markets later in 2004. Customers subscribing to Comcast's HDTV programming tier will be able to receive NBA TV HD.
Steve Burke, Comcast Cable's president, said:
"These agreements with NBA TV and NBA Entertainment enhance the value of Comcast Digital Cable by bringing our customers exciting NBA coverage as well as HDTV and video on demand programming. Comcast is a leader in delivering advanced entertainment services, and this agreement underscores our commitment to offer our customers TV on their terms, so they can watch what they want the way they want to watch it."
NBA Commissioner David Stern said:
"We are delighted that Comcast, which is committed to bringing the widest array of digital services to its subscribers -- the largest number in the United States -- has seen the value to its customers of the distinct programming of NBA TV and its high-definition telecasts. This agreement, together with our extensive video-on-demand services, will enable Comcast subscribers to experience and enjoy the powerful combination of sports programming and digital technology."
