US House votes to up indecency fines

The United States House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to increase the maximum penalties that can be applied to broadcasters for violations of indecency rules.

The House bill was approved by 391 votes to 22, and would give America's Federal Communications Commission authority to fine broadcasters up to $500,000 per violation. This is currently set at $27,500. Another aspect to the bill is that on-air personalities could also be subject to large fines in addition to those applied to the broadcaster.

Opponents of the bill, and a similar version being examined by the Senate, say that there is a risk that free-speech rights may be trampled by the new measures.
