The Scottish actor will play Dr. David Rush in Stargate Universe, the third TV spinoff from the 1994 Kurt Russell movie. The story is said to revolve around a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians who are trapped on a ship in deep space.
Stargate series creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper said: "We are very excited about having an actor of this calibre, around which we can build a strong, character-based series.
"Robert Carlyle will engage a broad audience and we hope to deliver a show that demonstrates to new viewers that the loyalty of longtime fans of the Stargate franchise has been well-deserved."
Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie on the Sci Fi Channel next summer.
