NBC eyes Wells cop drama for midseason

NBC is looking to close a deal with Warner Bros TV to air John Wells-produced cop drama Police in midseason.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network made a 12-episode order last year but WBTV recently turned it down due to uncertainty over NBC's long-term intentions.
Police producers view the show as ideal for the 10pm slot, but are concerned that NBC will pull the plug after one series when Jay Leno's new talkshow debuts at that time in September.
However, both sides are now working on a deal to bring Police to the midseason schedule, with a reduced order of six episodes and a WBTV/NBC co-production cited as possibilities.
Police, initially seen as a successor to Wells's ER, stars Tom Everett Scott, Regina King, Benjamin McKenzie and Kevin Alejandro as a team of law enforcement officers working in Los Angeles. Ann Biderman wrote the pilot and serves as executive producer.
