Turner Network Television is on schedule to launch a high-definition channel, TNT-HD, on digital TV platforms in America during May.
Placeholders for the channel have already appeared on websites of some digital cable operators, and equipment provider Scientific Atlanta announced yesterday that PowerVu HD encoding equipment has been installed at the Turner Broadcasting facility in Atlanta, Georgia.
"TNT selected our PowerVu system to deliver the 2004 NBA All-Star Game in high definition," said Paul Kosac, vice president of market development, Media Networks/Headend, Transmission Network Systems at Scientific-Atlanta. "With the launch of TNT in HD, the combination of our successful HD experience with TNT and the network's attractive programming can take the consumer's viewing experience to a new dimension."
TNT-HD will broadcast most of TNT's drama, movies and sports programming in high-definition format. The Grid, a co-production between TNT and the BBC, will air in high-definition in America on the channel.
