The network's entertainment president Nina Tassler has revealed that the singer is shooting a pilot for them.
"It'll be a music variety sketch show, and it's being developed now. It was his idea, we didn't reach out to him," she said.
Tassler refused to provide any further details but admitted that she was thrilled to be working with the star.
"I love him, he is so multitalented, he has a great personality, really smart, loves television, and is very funny and has a great sense of humour about himself."
The show will initially be broadcast as a special, with the possibility of a full series pick up.
Mayer, who is currently dating Jennifer Aniston, has worked with CBS before. In 2006, he made a cameo appearance in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
In 2004, he presented John Mayer Has A TV Show, but it only lasted one episode.
