FCC chief quits before inauguration

Federal Communications Commission chairman Kevin Martin will leave the regulator one day before the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.
Although Martin's departure as chairman was certain, he could have opted to serve out the rest of his term - which expired in 2011 - as a commissioner. He has instead chosen to leave the FCC entirely and serve as a senior fellow at the Aspen Institute in Washington.
"I have had the privilege of serving at the Federal Communications Commission for almost 8 years, including 4 years as the agency’s Chairman," Martin wrote in his resignation letter to President Bush. "During this period, we have seen a telecommunications industry undergoing rapid and unprecedented change. As a result of the market-oriented and consumer focused policies we have pursued the American people are now reaping the rewards of convergence and the broadband revolution including new and more innovative technologies and services at ever-declining prices."
President-elect Obama is expected to name former FCC staffer and technology executive Julius Genachowski to lead the regulator.
