The new look Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien will debut on June 1, but the comedian has assured fans that the programme will retain its sense of humour.
Speaking to reporters at the NBC Television Critics Association junket, he said: "Television is changing rapidly, and I want to make sure [the new Tonight Show] isn't too buttoned up... I want to make sure it is funny and a worthy Tonight Show.
"I think there has been speculation and uneasiness every time there has been a change in The Tonight Show host... Jay has been hosting the show for 16 or 17 years now. This is a big change."
O'Brien will front his final Late Show on February 20, before SNL alum Jimmy Fallon takes over on March 2.
However, he insisted that he has no plans to "do a big salute" to himself in his final broadcast, saying: "I am departing for a brief period of time and then reappearing in this fantastic dream job, so I want to walk the line carefully. I want to make sure I don't let down [fans], but I want it to look like me."
