Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment has joined forces with Dick Clark's production company to bring back long-running music show American Bandstand, it was confirmed today. Fuller is the creator of the successful Pop Idol format.
American Bandstand ran from 1957 to 1987 on ABC, and featured musical artists performing live or live-to-track.
"American Idol is one of the very few music formats to have been successful on network television in the U.S. for many years. American Bandstand was the first and longest running," explained Fuller. "Dick Clark is the father of American music television, and the prospect of the two of us working together to bring American Bandstand back to all its former glory, whilst giving it a 21st century twist, is very exciting indeed."
The new version of the show will be executive produced by Fuller, Dick Clark - the show's original host, and Allen Shapiro of Mosaic Media Group. Shapiro is both president of Mosaic, the majority shareholder in Dick Clark Productions, and the architect of the deal.
"Bringing back an American tradition like Bandstand has always been a dream of mine," said Dick Clark, "and I can't think of a better person to partner with than Simon Fuller, whose foresight in trend-setting television shows and music will surely bring the show new luster and then some."
