The former EastEnders actress landed the lead role in the sci-fi remake in February 2007, but the show's production was halted months later due to the US writers' strike.
In 2008, it was confirmed that the programme would not be recommissioned following disappointing ratings.
Speaking to The Guardian about the project's fate, Ryan revealed: "It was really upsetting because we had been making a great, popular show.
"I thought there would be a new series after the writers' strike ended - but NBC thought the momentum we had built up had gone. So they cancelled it."
Asked if she considered returning to Albert Square following the setback, she replied: "There's just no way I would allow that to happen."
Ryan returns to screens in tonight's special episode of Doctor Who, playing the Time Lord's latest companion Lady Christina de Souza.
