The pair were reported to be feuding over which of them could be considered for a best actress Emmy come nomination time, according to WENN.
HBO executives are said to have placed Barrymore in the main category and put Lange in for a best supporting actress nod. The decision reportedly caused a division between the two women until studio bosses agreed to let them square off against each other.
"Lange's immediate reaction was that she's won two Oscars, and that she has equal screen time to Barrymore," a source told Page Six. "She felt she wasn't a supporting character in the film, and that it'd be dishonest and a manipulation of votes. She didn't want a part of it."
A spokesperson for HBO added: "Obviously people wanted a scenario where everyone was happy. At the end of the day, HBO was the one who looked at the screen time and made the call."
The Emmy Awards will be televised in September.
