NBC celebrates Olympics win

NBC Universal said today that 24/7 coverage of the Athens Summer Games has cast a "halo effect" across its entire channel lineup.

"Our plan worked," said Randy Falco, president of the NBCU Network Television Group. "The strategy coming into the Games was to use all of our platforms to aggregate the largest possible audience and then to promote across all platforms. New viewers discovered our cable networks and substantial numbers of people who watched at different times of the day across different platforms were driven to watch NBC in primetime. We're in the viewership business - that's what we sell - and we succeeded in increasing our viewership across the platforms."

The media giant reels off a range of statistics showing that through various lead-ins, lead-outs and "flow" between NBC stations, ratings are up across the organisation's output. Effects have been so far reaching that even MSNBC, long the third-placed news network behind Fox News and CNN, has been nipping at CNN's heels during Olympic coverage and the early primetime news programmes that follow it.
