The show, which stars Jeremy Sisto and Anthony Anderson, is believed to have been ordered for an initial 16 episodes.
The new order means that the Dick Wolf crime drama will match Gunsmoke's record 20-year run.
Law & Order joins the recently renewed Chuck in NBC's 2009-10 season.
NBC is expected to announce its full new season lineup later today.
