Oprah: 'Let audiences decide for themselves'

Oprah Winfrey has said that her chatshow viewers can decide for themselves on whether to take the programme's medical advice.

The talkshow show host came under fire after US publication Newsweek alleged that the series features unproven and controversial health practices, E! reports.

The article in question singled out guest Jenny McCarthy for an on air discussion about her six-year-old son Evan’s autism and the anti-vaccination stance she has taken against fighting the development disorder.

Winfrey maintained that viewers are "smart and discerning enough to seek out medical opinions to determine what may be best for them".

"For 23 years, my show has presented thousands of topics that reflect the human experience, including doctors' medical advice and personal health stories that have prompted conversations between our audience members and their health care providers," she said in a statement.
