Production on the programme's 23rd run will begin in the US capital later this summer ahead of a planned 2010 premiere, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In a statement, MTV's president of programming Tony DiSanto revealed that the network is "thrilled to be filming our classic franchise in the heart of where history is being made".
The show's 22nd season, which was made in Cancun, will begin on the cable channel on June 24.
MTV ordered four more editions of The Real World in April. Speaking at the time, executive producer Jon Murray promised "long-range thinking" for the programme's future.
