The tale, about an artist's mission to find his son after a mysterious cell phone signal turns humans into hordes of zombies, was to be adapted into a movie for Dimension Films. However, director Eli Roth admitted earlier that he would no longer be helming the horror film.
The thriller will now be made into a four-hour television series to be written by John Harrison under The Weinstein Company's guidance, Fangoria reports. The screenwriter recently penned a film version of Clive Barker's Books Of Blood, which is being premiered at the Montreal Fantasia Film Festival.
It is understood that Harrison confirmed to audiences awaiting the screening that he was attached to adapt Cell, which he considers "one of King's best recent books". He added that he envisions the plot along the lines of a Village Of The Damned-style chiller.
The proposed project is currently being shopped around to US networks.
