The US show is based on Elmore Leonard short story Fire In The Hole, while the 41-year-old actor is to portray a modern day law enforcer with a 19th century sensibility, TV Guide reports.
The series was developed by Graham Yost, who will remain on board as executive producer.
"Graham began with a memorable character from one of America's foremost crime novelists, Elmore Leonard, and we scored the hat-trick signing Tim Olyphant, who is absolutely pitch perfect in the role of Raylan Givens," FX president John Landgraf said in a statement.
Production on Lawman is scheduled to begin in Southern California this autumn and the programme will debut in spring 2010.
