Dan Rather retires from 'Evening News'
Published Tuesday, Nov 23 2004, 22:32 GMT | By James Welsh

Rather will be stepping down on the twenty-fourth anniversary of his first broadcast as anchor of the network's flagship evening news broadcast. No successor has been named.
The anchor had been criticised for a report he presented on 60 Minutes Wednesday. The report casts doubts on President George Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard, but the documents the report relied on were later found to be of questionable provenance. An independent investigation is now taking place. However, CBS today indicated that Rather's decision was not related to the report; instead, it was portrayed as a mutual decision between the network and Rather that had been reached during the summer of 2004.
