The characters of Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys) and Scotty Wandell (Luke Macfarlane), who were married during the second season's finale, are said to discuss the possibility of becoming parents upon the show's return in autumn.
"We really are exploring Kevin and Scotty in the beginning of this season," producer Monica Owusu-Breen told AfterElton.com.
"Scotty is getting more of his own point of view this season. Because they're discussing having a child, there are many more Kevin and Scotty scenes, at least in the first ten episodes."
She added: "There are gay writers on our show that are trying to have children, and heterosexual couples who have adopted.
"All the many permutations of becoming a parent are reflected on our writing staff. This is an issue close to the writing staff's heart. There are a lot of stories being told that come from truth."
Rhys had previously said that he was happy that the show was praised for its positive reflection of the gay lifestyle.
It was recently reported that a promotional video revealed further plotlines for the show's fourth season.
Brothers & Sisters returns to US TV on Sunday, September 27 on ABC.
