It is understood that the former O.C. actress has landed the key role for the programme's 100th episode, on which she will portray a love interest of the character of Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), who in the year 2030 recounts to his children the events that led him to meeting their mum.
"Ted will also get as close to meeting the mum as he's ever before," creator Carter Bays told TV Guide. "I don't want to give it away, but he gets so tantalisingly close, it's ridiculous."
Representatives for Bilson and the show have said that the appearance is a one-time guest star spot.
