Executive producer Al Jean has offered fans the opportunity to create their own Simpsons character.

The competition is being staged as part of the animated comedy's 20th anniversary celebrations.

Entries can be sent to the show's official website until the deadline of October 24. Jean requested that the creations are "pithy and funny".

They must also be human, have a name, occupation, age and catchphrase. Show creator Matt Groening will be among the judging panel.

The winning creation will be granted a cameo in an upcoming episode, which will also feature a guest voice appearance from Coldplay's Chris Martin. The winner is to be announced next month and they will be given the chance to work with the programme's producers and animators on the project.
