The former Lipstick Jungle star will play a neighbour and nemesis of Patricia Heaton's Frankie, reports Entertainment Weekly.
"She's a single mother with four sons that terrorise the neighbourhood. Everyone wants to stay on her good side. Patricia's character tries to keep the peace," said an anonymous source.
Shields's episode is slated to air in early 2010.
The Middle airs Wednesday nights on ABC.
