According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show ended its eight-season run by becoming the most watched hour-long programme on basic cable.
With Tony Shalhoub playing the title role for a final time, the finale drew 9.4m viewers. A total of 3.2m were adults aged 18-49.
It was the largest audience ever for the series and its USA Network, as well as for a drama on basic cable, beating out the 9.2m for previous record-holder The Closer.
"What a perfect way for Monk, our first tentpole success, to finish its run - going out even stronger than it came in, and helping to launch another great show White Collar," said USA's president of original programming Jeff Wachtel.
