Supermodel Tyra Banks had originally approached the Vogue editor when she was laying the groundwork for the first season of Top Model eight years ago.
"At that point, I said no because it was the beginning. I was thinking I wanted to see where it goes," Talley told Women's Wear Daily.
The editor, who signed up for three cycles of the show, admits that he has never actually seen an episode of Top Model.
"I just felt that it was a way to step out of the box and associate myself with a very important American success story, a very important brand - Tyra Banks."
Banks hopes that Talley's presence will help to steer the show in a more high-fashion direction.
"André speaks about fashion and he has such a passion, and the words - the adverbs, the adjectives - he uses!" she said. "It might go over their head, but he's educating them about a time, bringing them back to a place when fashion was life."
The fourteenth season of America's Top Model will premiere on the CW on March 10.
