The Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination has honoured Cynthia Nixon at its award ceremony.

The Sex And The City star received the 'Vita Russo Award', which is given to an openly gay media professional who has made a "significant difference in promoting equal rights".

The View's Joy Behar was also celebrated at the ceremony and picked up the 'Excellence In Media' accolade.

Elsewhere, Brothers & Sisters, which features a gay couple trying to have a baby, was named 'Outstanding Drama Series'.

Meanwhile, Parks & Recreation, which Brothers & Sisters star Rob Lowe will join shortly, won the 'Outstanding Individual Episode' for 'Pawnee Zoo'.

Further awards will be presented in Los Angeles on April 17 and in San Francisco on June 5.
