Series producer Michael Schur told the Los Angeles Times that the star will depart this season.
Schneider, who starred in the recent feature Bright Star, plays city planner Mark Brendanawicz, the boyfriend of Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones).
"Paul now has this film career that is just taking off in a big way," Schur said.
He added: "And the movie opportunities he's getting are incredibly cool, interesting movies, not the summer blockbuster movies that can be scheduled around TV actors when they need to be."
Schur said that Schneider may return in the future.
Adam Scott and Rob Lowe recently signed to join the NBC comedy.
