US network picks up new Gervais sitcom

Pay TV network HBO has secured the rights to premiere Ricky Gervais' new sitcom in America.

Extras, which stars the comic as an aspiring actor, will air on HBO shortly after its debut on BBC Two in July.

Gervais' first major project The Office was shown on BBC America in the US, where it went on to win two Golden Globes.

Extras is likely to have a wider appeal, with Hollywood stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet and Patrick Stewart all making cameo appearances.

"Ricky Gervais is one of the most original comic voices working today," said Carolyn Strauss, President of HBO Entertainment. "HBO is extremely proud to join with the BBC in bringing his new show to America."

Gervais added: "It's an honour to be on the same channel that gave us The Sopranos and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse."
