The programme, which features cartoon versions of Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington, aired in February. The second run is expected to air later this year.
Based on the British comedian's popular podcasts, the show will be broadcast in the UK on Channel 4 from April 23.
"With this second series we would have already done as many episodes as The Office and Extras put together," said Gervais. "This can run and run as long as Karl remains a global village idiot."
HBO president Michael Lombardo added: "Ricky's hilarious show has sparked a loyal and enthusiastic following that is growing steadily throughout the season."
