The Ugly Betty star will serve as executive producer on the project, reports The AP.
The show is currently being developed by MTV and multimedia studio Electus, run by former NBC producer Ben Silverman.
The series, called Pedro and Maria, will allow the audience to vote on the direction that storylines take by using a number of interactive web platforms.
Casting has yet to be announced for the programme, billed as a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet.
