The dramedy, based on the 1989 film of the same name, was given mixed reviews after its premiere last month.
The mid-season show, which stars Peter Krause and Lauren Graham, has averaged 6.58 million viewers over the course of its seven outings so far.
"We are so happy to welcome back this multi-layered and compelling series for another season," said Angela Bromstad, president of primetime entertainment on NBC.
She added: "It's gratifying that Parenthood continues to garner critical acclaim and is generating highly positive reaction from viewers, thanks to the fearless creativity of its producers and the extraordinary performances delivered by its ensemble cast."
NBC added that the programme had performed well in the 18-49 adult demographic, which was the key reason for its recommission.
