History has teamed up with BBC Worldwide to produce the show, The Hollywood Reporter says.
The network has committed to ten episodes of the programme, which is expected to debut in the autumn.
The series will be hosted by Rescue Me star Adam Ferrara, stunt driver Tanner Foust and racing analyst Rutledge Wood.
History president Nancy Dubuc promised not to change the original too much.
"The history of the automobile and the history of America are intimately intertwined - to celebrate one is to celebrate the other," she said. "We'll stay true to the original format and add a sense of the American car culture."
Meanwhile, BBC Worldwide's Jane Tranter suggested that the show could be even more successful in America than it is in Britain.
"It will have a completely different landscape," she said. "There's a different relationship with cars in the US and a fascination with customisation that's much greater than in the UK. There's the potential for the US Top Gear to have even greater traction with an audience."
Last year, Top Gear was named the best television show of the decade in a poll.
