Speaking to TV Guide Magazine, Matt Nix explained that Jesse Garcia, played by Coby Bell, will cause problems for Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) when he arrives.
"Jesse really shakes up the dynamic of the show this year because he's someone that in a way is part of the team," Nix said. "He's helping Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar), Michael and Sam (Bruce Campbell) with their clients and really putting his life on the line and doing the same things that they do.
"He has a sort of similar quest to Michael as he's trying to find out who burned him. Michael faces the issue of having his new best friend who he's also lying to. It really shakes him up and changes a lot of the relationships on the show. There are reasons that he can't tell him and as the season goes on, those reasons become harder to sustain."
Nix also suggested that Jesse's arrival will affect the relationship between Michael and Fiona.
"I wouldn't say it turns into a traditional love triangle but it definitely changes the romantic landscape," he said. "Michael and Fiona will always have that tension between them and be sparring all the time. They will always be playing the 'will they, won't they' game, which I find is much more interesting than them settling down. They are always in love with each other, it's just whether they can handle each other. She's nitrous and he's glycerin."
Burn Notice returns for its fourth season on June 3 on USA.
