Colin Hanks has admitted that he likes playing a funny character in The Good Guys.

Speaking to Parade, Hanks explained that he enjoys sparring with his co-star Bradley Whitford on the show.

"I love getting a chance to go for some laughs instead of playing the straight man," he said. "Bradley is a hoot, but I get to be funny back.

"I really get a kick out of that witty banter back and forth, even when it isn't so witty. Plus, my character is a little hot-headed, so I get to yell at Bradley too."

Hanks added that he likes the dynamic between the two characters, saying: "Somebody said we're Ernest Borgnine and Jan Michael Vincent. I prefer Michael Douglas and Karl Malden. Anyway, we're definitely different. Bradley is a laid-back veteran and I'm the by-the-book young detective who's on his case."

The Good Guys premieres on June 7 at 9pm on Fox.
