Rickey Minor has made his debut appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.

The former American Idol bandleader was announced as the primetime show's new music director earlier this year following the departure of Kevin Eubanks.

The opening segment of last night’s show saw Leno telling Minor that he knew it probably wasn't an easy decision to leave Idol, prompting Minor to quip, "Idol is one of the biggest hits on TV but I'm sure NBC has lots of hits", before the show cut to opening credits.

He later told Leno that his first day was "going well, pretty smooth" despite a "couple of hiccups".

Minor previously said that he is "thankful" and "grateful" for the six years that he spent on Idol, and that he is proud to have helped "elevate live music" on television.
