Speaking to Zap2It, ABC executive Quinn Taylor praised the show for performing well in the ratings during the difficult summer period.
"We're very pleased that the show has connected with viewers, especially considering the challenge of finding an audience in the summer," he said. "[We] are excited to pick it up for a second season."
The series - which features former Reaper star Missy Peregrym as rookie cop Andy McNally - has averaged 7.1 million viewers per week. The actress previously compared the new show to Grey's Anatomy.
Production on the second season is scheduled to start later in the year in Toronto. ABC is expected to air the new episodes in 2011.
The first season of Rookie Blue is currently airing on ABC.
