The actor plays writer Hank Moody in the Showtime comedy-drama.
"It's an adult comedy, but not in the X-rated sense," he explained to What's On TV. "I've never seen it as a show about sex. It's a light-hearted look at a man with inner conflicts and self-esteem problems."
He revealed that while he did not get embarrassed filming sex scenes for the show, other members of the cast were less confident.
"Certainly Evan Handler, who plays Hank's agent Charlie, has found himself in situations that he probably doesn't want to tell his grandchildren about." joked Duchovny. "But it's all for fun."
The former X-Files star also compared Moody to his former character, FBI agent Fox Mulder.
"I guess that they both want to know the truth and they both speak the truth." he said.
Californication will return to Showtime for a fourth season in January.
