The programme focuses on a man, played by James Wolk, who leads a double life and has two separate families.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Killen has now revealed that he chose to air the show on Fox because executives promised to keep the negative sides of the characters.
"[They wanted a] show where everybody's grey, where decisions are complicated, where the conflict is not simple," he said.
"Where the person that you're rooting for is incredibly problematic, married to two people and is a con man, but somehow by humanising that person, you end up getting behind him."
Lone Star premieres on September 20 on Fox.
