The executive producer of Life Unexpected has admitted that Cate and Ryan will struggle in future episodes.

The couple, played by Shiri Appleby and Kerr Smith, married in the first season finale but Liz Tigelaar explained that their relationship will not be easy.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she revealed that the pair will realise Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) was not the cause of all their problems.

"Baze has been a thorn in their side but in the second season the dynamic is going to shift a bit," Tigelaar said. "Whereas before they had a common enemy in Baze - all of their problems can be kind of blamed on him - they come to realise that maybe other things are more of a problem. Removing Baze from the equation highlights some other things they hadn't quite worked out."

She added: "This season is very much the story of a young marriage and the trials and tribulations that they go through and the way you're kind of thrust together, torn apart, and brought back together. It's like everyone always says - the first year of marriage is the hardest. I think that they're going to experience that."

The second season of Life Unexpected will premiere on September 14 on The CW.
