Rene Balcer admitted to AfterElton that a gay character was a strong possibility given the diverse nature of Los Angeles.
"I think [the show] should reflect the community. And the gay community is very important in this city, as it is in many other cities," he said. "Especially in this city, politically, it's very powerful."
Balcer previously announced that a forthcoming episode of the crime drama would focus on the recent overturning of California's Proposition 8, which banned gay people in the state from getting married.
Law & Order: Los Angeles will premiere on NBC on September 29.
