Speaking to Blastr, he denied that gladiator Gannicus (Dustin Clare) was likely to die since he did not appear in the original show.
"Yes, there are characters, obviously, that you know survive into season one, and there are new characters who aren't in season one who you may [suspect] don't survive," he admitted. "[But] we do have a way to mix that up so you're never quite 100% sure."
DeKnight confirmed that the prequel would not only fill in the backstory of Blood and Sand, but also set up the forthcoming second season.
"There are things that happen in the prequel that come back around in season two," he said. "So in that way it all ties together. If the prequel were purely telling stories and filling in information that we learned in season one, I would have had some doubt."
Series star Lucy Lawless also recently promised that the six-part miniseries would "surprise" viewers.
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena will air on Starz in January.
