Speaking to TV Guide, O'Loughlin explained that the new version of Steve McGarrett is morally ambiguous and is prepared to use torture to get to the truth.
"That messy boy stuff is what I like most," he said. "There are definitely Jack Bauer elements to my Steve McGarrett."
He continued: "He's not averse to methods others would be jailed for. I did a scene yesterday where I'm hanging a guy by his ankles 36 stories above Waikiki."
Meanwhile, Scott Caan explained that his character Danny does not immediately get on with McGarrett.
"Our characters are set up to butt heads," he said. "But we're alike in a lot of ways."
Hawaii Five-0 premieres on September 20 on CBS.
