The actress told Access Hollywood that she is most inspired by the devotion that the former first lady showed to her children.
"She was an amazing mother and she was a very strong woman," said Holmes. "She did a lot right."
The Batman Begins star stated that it is an honour to play someone that is so beloved by the American public.
"It's been amazing and a little overwhelming because [Onassis] is such an icon and so important to our country and so many people have fun memories of her."
Holmes added: "In doing the research, I learned so much about her and my adoration for her only grew, so it's been really fun. It's always great to play a character that you love."
The Kennedys will premiere in 2011 on The History Channel.
