Phoenix will appear on the September 22 edition of the talkshow to promote a documentary on his music career called I'm Still Here, according to The AP.
The Oscar nominee garnered headlines in 2009 after a combative appearance on Letterman's show where he seemed unwilling to answer the presenter's questions.
Letterman famously expressed his confusion with Phoenix's decision to leave acting to pursue rap stardom and joked about his scruffy appearance by asking him to "tell us about your days with the Unabomber".
Clips of the 2009 interview drew close to eight million hits on YouTube and the CBS website.
