It was previously reported that Coleman - who played Noah Bennet on Heroes - would make a guest appearance on the CBS crime drama.
He told TV Guide that his character Max Winter would be a wealthy and arrogant murder suspect.
"The man who murdered my wife is himself murdered," he explained. "[The case] could conceivably have a fairly profound effect on Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), who lost his own wife and daughter."
Coleman also confirmed his former co-star Masi Oka's claim that Heroes creator Tim Kring had planned to kill off the show's regular cast one by one in a potential fifth season.
"A Ten Little Indians thing was very much a possibility," he admitted. "Based on the execution, no pun intended, it could have been brilliant."
Coleman's appearance on The Mentalist will air on October 14.
